Impending doom
I have (probably) my last huge hurdle to overcome next week being my medical long case, and yet here I am procrastinating my precious study afternoon away!
The only thing at this stage keeping me sane is my occasional non-stop Scramble With Friends games and 24/7 non-stop swedish house from radioseven.se. It brings a flavoursome combo of the latest and most popular EDM hits you’ll find off beatport.com but also some tracks from underground artists from Sweden.
A radio station with non-stop swedish electro and progressive house with a splashing of trance here and there? I’m totally sold.
(Also, I’m listening to this station via the app Radium. Get it off the Mac App Store, it’s about $26 but I highly recommend it if you’re a regular radio listener!)
The Russians Used a Pencil: The 4-inch iPhone
A couple weeks ago, a gentlemen named Timothy Collins called into the Vergecast podcast and sent the blogosphere into a tizzy by suggesting how Apple could increase the screen size in a new iPhone by simply elongating the screen to a 16:9 (ish) ratio, while keeping the same resolution (326 dpi)….
Interesting thoughts on a very possible and highly sought after change to the iPhone.

The New iPad

I had an endless banter going on with my housemate prior to the new iPad’s launch claiming that it was going to be called an “iPad 3” and he insisted that it was going to be called an “iPad 2S” (probably something he tells himself everything before he goes to bed as he got a shiny new iPad two about a month ago). Funnily enough we – and subsequently the rest of the internet world – were wrong. It’s no longer the iPad “insert number/abbreviation/other crap”, it’s just “iPad”.
And I’m probably repeating what’s being said around the tech blog world, but it makes sense. I get that having different names is good for product differentiation, but my MacBook Pro isn’t called the MacBook Pro 3 or MacBook Pro 3S. And I expect that this trend is going to happen with the iPhone. There probably won’t be an “iPhone 5”, but there will just be “The New iPhone”. They probably could’ve done it with the 4S, but for whatever reason (I still think they named it that as a final tribute to the late Steve Jobs, who probably came up with the numbering system in the first place) you’ll probably see the numbering system dropped.
A good friend of mine sent me a message this morning just as the headlines for iPad were announced and it read, “How’s iPad? No wow factor aye”. And I think that’s where the problem for a lot of people out there have. They continually expect Apple to release a life-changing device that will end world hunger, cure the terminally ill and shoot rainbows out of it’s screen (which this current iPad actually gets close to).
MG Siegler couldn’t have said it any better, that “for whatever reason, we’re wired to only think that something is truly new if it looks completely different”. Why change something that isn’t broke? Why change it if it works? It’s the same argument against those that hated on the iPhone 4S purely because externally, it looked exactly the same as the previous iPhone 4. To date, I still haven’t seen a phone that is designed with such precision and beauty.
The new retina display, new 5mp camera, new GPU, maintained form factor and sustained battery-life in the face of 4G LTE technology (especially this one) are all huge leaps in the category.
To date, there still is no real competition against the iPad. The tablet market still remains as the iPad market. Android tablets are simply competing against each other and the large gulf between iPads and android tablets will remain for a while yet. Once this changes, Apple will change once more and dive in a different segment. Next year. In 5 years. In 10 years, who knows?
The best is still yet to come though apparently. As Tim Cook hinted, “this year you’re going to see a lot more of this type of innovation…we’re just getting started.” I’m excited.
