Friday Night Markets.
Every week on friday night, Chinatown becomes alive with their weekly markets. The markets are an opportunity for different people to sell their wares and make a quick buck. The majority of stalls are either “cheap” brand name clothing or “cheap” jewelery for the greater Asian population that now resides in the city of Sydney.
This QQ food store is one of many food stalls that provide authentic and bang-for-your-buck asian snacks/food. The other attraction for me personally is the name “QQ” – for those that know internet slang, they’ll understand :)
Surprisingly this photos was taken at a stall run by a caucasian male and was probably (to myself) the most interesting stall at the markets. You pay $2 per letter to make a train out of your name! I know it sounds silly, but I was intrigued.
The last couple of photos are just a very small example of what we saw and experienced in the markets. The last photo shows a young woman and young man pulling out their iPhones to record/capture the main attraction of the night – the lion dancers. iPhones were an extremely common sighting that night, with probably every second or third person pulling out their own iPhones to do the same.
This particular store provided delicious noodle snacks, filled with salty, addictive MSG goodness; and all for an extremely affordable price of a couple of dollars!
The lion dancers were definitely the main attraction of the night and they impressed the crowd (as evident from the first few photos). Every single athletic move they made, called for a round of applause and cheering.
Among the crowd were your Asian fobs, 14 — 15 year old teeny boppers, Asian families and also the odd caucasian tourist. Kids were hoisted onto their parent’s shoulders to watch the show unfold.
