Bed Shenanigans
Living in Tamworth last year and having a great queen sized bed probably didn’t help my desire for an equivalent bed this year. Having shopped around at IKEA, Domayne, Harvey Norman and the sort – and because I’m a poor uni student – I ended up purchasing a nice but cheap queen sized bed (frame and mattress) from Fantastic Furniture (the Nash range if you’re interested).
Because of the size, it had to be delivered (and I don’t even want to think about how I’m going to lug this thing back to Sydney at the end of this year…). The frame came in two large boxes…and will prove to be a challenge to dispose of. I’ll probably throw it in the garage or cut it up into smaller pieces and gradually get rid of them over time through recycling. Also, thanks to my girlfriend I now regret throwing out the plastic wrapping that the mattress came in considering it could’ve been used to wrap and protect the mattress when I ultimately move it back to Sydney.

Though this job was aided by a housemate of mine, assembly was simple enough – once you figured out which screw corresponded to which.

However, there were a couple of tiny hiccups on the way:
- The bed slats are held together by plastic cases with small round feet that fit snuggly onto holes punched into the bed frame. The feet on these cases more than often proved much too large to push into the holes and instead were bent and molded back into the case itself when excessive force was used. Instead I had to continually un-bend these feet and try again…many times.
- On the bed head, where 2 of the 4 feet that lift the bed off the floor, there were two holes. One deceptively easier to see than the other. Tried to screw the foot onto the first visible hole and turned out to be a fake. Instead the real hole was buried underneath the canvas that lined the rear and they had stapled the canvas over the hole. Or perhaps they forgot about punching a hole in the first case. Anyhow, this required some cutting and trimming to find this proper screw hole and eventually got the foot on.

Despite these hiccups, needless to say I’m very impressed with the overall look and quality of the bed frame. Sure there’s higher quality bed frames out there made from better cuts of wood, but for the price of 599 which included frame and mattress you really can’t go wrong. The mattress is sufficiently firm to my liking as well, though it is kinda soft on the edges, but this is only a small issue in someone like me who prefers a harder bed than normal.
Still yet to properly test this bed out however…
